COTERC's partner SAIT.ca recently provided a great update on a major student project taking place at the COTERC Biological Research Station evolving the use of GIS Technology.

SAIT Writes:
Using satellite imagery, GIS and web tools, the trio has compiled data over the past six months related to the habitat range and foraging behaviour of the Jaguar, Spider Monkey, Baird’s tapir and White-Lipped Peccary in the Central American country. They’ve done the work from a lab on SAIT’s Calgary campus.

It’s all part of their capstone applied research project – a requirement to complete the Bachelor of Applied Technology Geographic Information Systems (BGIS) program. Their client is the Canadian Organization for Tropical Education and Rainforest Conservation (COTERC), a non-profit charity based in Pickering, Ontario.

Using Satellite images obtained from NASA and the COTERC Biological Station as a base will provide useful data to help continue and improve conservation efforts and habitat studies for the jaguar, spider monkey, Baird’s tapir and white-lipped peccary.
